The Vijay Mallya - he is the man I look up to – and honestly, I constantly being judged for this. I do admire him for many good qualities he has and things he has done. He taught India – what is luxury. He taught this country – how to live life lavishly. Every Indian might have secretly desired to live life of Mallya for at least one day but not at the cost of losing an Empire.
The Vijay Mallya Story is a detailed and lively chronicle of the life of one of India's most celebrated and reviled businessmen—Vijay Mallya. His extraordinary career spans three decades and is spread across multiple industries. The book covers Mallya's childhood, his relationship with his father and his inherent deal making abilities. It tracks his meteoric rise with Kingfisher and how the airline led to his downfall.
K. Giriprakash, as journalist, has closely followed Vijay Mallya's career over the last two decades which gives him a unique vantage point to draw an extraordinary portrait of a man whom everyone is fascinated by but not many know (if you had been following Vijay Mallya, like me, then you would be knowing all the facts author mentioned in this book, so nothing new to be found in this book), I was expecting more insight in his life.
Vijay Mallya's life is a lesson to be learnt by any entrepreneur, especially young entrepreneurs who are paving their way in business - How a fast decision to start Kingfisher Airlines has changed the life of Mallya and UB Group? Mistake by mistake made by Mallya deteriorated the Empire of Mallya's. UB group liquor which has a market share of 70% is now in the hands of Diageo.
Vijay Mallya. Can he be considered as an Indian version of Iron Man? (Show-off), A Womanizer reeking of Wealth from every Pore of his Skin? A Charming Persona who likes living life The Great Gatsby way? The Answer to all this question is a hell Yes. However, do we know him for what he is beneath all this? To answer this, you should join Twitter if you are already not a member & see for yourself how everyone bashes Mallya (even unemployed people, IRONY). This Book is for all those Idiots who think of him as a fool, who haven’t walked in his shoes, who apart from his IPL & Kingfisher Swimsuit calendar fancies, don’t know him as a Person, who can’t see how brilliant, and brainy is he.
The Author, K Giriprakash who was earlier a journalist, has very well covered all the highs & lows of Vijay Mallya's life. The narration is facts based & very Crisp. However, whenever a Journalist turns into an Author, the common mistake he does is writing a book in the standard Newspaper format, which they are used too. A recent example of that is Byculla to Bangkok written by critically acclaimed Hussain Zaidi, which speaks on fact but lacks a Human Touch. Similarly, in this book, we get too see Vijay Mallya through a Bird's point of view. There are no dialogues, no Interactions which usually help readers get into the skin of the Characters. A Good Book however if you want to know about Vijay Mallya in detail, wait for his Autobiography, for which I have been waiting since ages now and have desire to write one.
Recommendation: Ideal for a casual and short read.
