"Etchings of the First Quarter of 2020 " by Sabarna Roy is an elegant read comprising of slim yet effective conversations with letters, poems and essence of random expressions. The book is a unique read given the fact that the etchings portrayed are bit different yet artistically subtle in approach. It's a college of the poems etched by the writer in the first quarter of this year, along with a series of correspondence of letters between the author, his daughter and a few other people.
The book is divided in 4 parts:
In his letter to his stepdaughter (TULIP), he conveys all his well-being, past and feelings, which will touch one's heart.
In his letter to Suranjana who is the senior of his sister and attended her seminar on DARK SIDE OF THE MIND, he writes and explains the story of LOLITA, which targets the issue of pedophiles and child molester.
Here there is a conversation between Babazula and Tulip regarding Dualities and Schizophrenia in utmost detail. How people consider schizophrenia as Multiple personalities; it is a myth.
Winter poems- These poems are very different and explained in a way of storytelling.
The start of the book was very promising and unique, with the letter to the daughter but somehow the book fell flat after that. There is no doubt that thought has gone into the book, but it just seemed too disconnected for my taste. Random topics were mentioned with no thread tying them together. it was just like generic thoughts in someone's head. The third segment especially was too full of facts that for a moment, I felt that it was a research paper. Poems, with no rhyme, they held a lot of meaning. The poems were about quite a different range of topics from the streets of Kolkata to about the writer's alter ego Sam whom I found quite disturbing.
Duality and constancy both make the universe stable in approach, this thought is described by the author on the pretext of varied circumstances of life. Answers to the questions lies within us but we usually wait to ponder upon them. The book is defined to let the readers think of the inexpressible and untouched scenarios of life which exists just around us. Each letter is bound to pamper the readers with an unaltered imagination of afterthoughts. Certainly, the book has an insightful objective and the essence would be understood by those who could take this journey within the depth of thoughts. Given the fact that, the sequence of the letters could have been well received, but somehow it did not make sense. Other than that, the book is a soft yet deep read.
Overall, the entire book was quite well written, but I wasn't very content with the content. My ideas matched with the authors on a certain level but not completely and he didn't manage to change my mind, either.
On the whole, the book wasn't up to the mark for me.
Yes, many people have liked the book, so give it a try and decide yourself.
